Proprietary estoppel allows a lodger to get a share of the house

In Campbell v Griffin and others [2001] EWCA Civ 990, the Court of Appeal awarded a lodger a share in the proceeds of sale of the house on the basis of his actions looking after the elderly couple, who were his landlords.

The case illustrates how relatively easy it is to demonstrate detrimental reliance and the flexibility of the court in determining how to give effect to the remedy.
